Zacchaeus was a Wee Little Man

by Beverly Newbold

Jesus traveled many places to teach others about God.  One day, he went to a town called Jericho.  In that town lived a man named Zacchaeus, who made his living as a tax collector.   In those days, tax collectors were greedy and mean to people who did not always have enough money to pay their taxes.  It was a law that everyone must give a portion of money to the government.  Sometimes it meant that people would not have enough money left to buy food.

Zacchaeus was very good at his job and had become very rich.  He was not well-liked by the people of his town.

Zacchaeus had heard of a man named Jesus, who was said to be the Son of God.  One day, he learned that Jesus was coming to Jericho and he wanted to see him.  Zacchaeus was a short, little man and when the crowds began to gather to see Jesus, Zacchaeus was not tall enough to see over them.

“I must find a way to see this man, Jesus!”  Zacchaeus thought.   “What can I do?”   Then he had an idea that just might solve his problem!

There were some sycamore trees growing along the road on which Jesus would be walking.  “I know what I can do!  I will climb up into one of those trees and I will be able to see him as he passes by,” thought Zacchaeus.  And that is exactly what he did!

Zacchaeus could see Jesus clearly as he approached Jericho.  Just as Jesus came by the tree in which Zacchaeus was sitting, he stopped and looked up into the tree at Zacchaeus.  And then Jesus spoke to Zacchaeus!

“Zacchaeus, you need to come down,” said Jesus.  “You must hurry for I am going to your house to stay with you for the night.”

Zacchaeus could not believe what Jesus had just told him,  and so he hurried down from the tree.  He was so happy that Jesus wanted to come to his house!

All the people around Jesus and Zacchaeus began to grumble and complain that Jesus would want to be a guest in the house of a man that they all thought was a sinner.  “Why would Jesus do that?” one man said.

Zacchaeus was so honored to think that Jesus would stay with him, and he told Jesus, “I will give half of my belongings to the poor, and if I have cheated any man, I will pay him back four times the amount of money that I took from him!”

Jesus told Zacchaeus, “Today, salvation has come to your house, for you are also a son of Abraham.  The Son of Man comes to seek and save the lost.”

Why was Zacchaeus not liked by the people of Jericho?

Why do you think it was so important to Zacchaeus to see Jesus?

Why do you think Jesus chose to visit Zacchaeus at his house?

How do you think Zacchaeus felt when he learned Jesus had chosen him?

What did Jesus mean when he said he had come to seek and save the lost?

Zacchaeus was a wee little man

And a wee little man was he.

He climbed up in a sycamore tree

For the Lord he wanted to see.

And as the Savior passed his way,

He looked up in the tree,

And He said, “Zacchaeus, you come down!

For I’m going to your house today,

For I’m going to your house today.

PRAYER:  Thank you, Lord, for loving all people and coming to save each of us.  You do not judge others and have shown us that everyone is worthy of forgiveness.  Let us be glad when someone accepts you as our Lord and Savior.
